MENTOR RECRUITING

MENTORS NEEDED

As we near the end of our first SOAH Youth Leadership Development internship year, we are pleased to report that the inaugural high school internship cohort has done an outstanding job, and the internship program has been a huge success. Interns have participated and helped at numerous SOAH events, they have developed, initiated and carried out youth-oriented SOAH activities and programs, and they have made excellent progress toward their individual goals. Most importantly, interns have learned about social justice, made important contributions to SOAH’s mission, and are on a path to becoming future leaders in this area.

Excited by the success of our first internship class, we are hoping to grow the program by increasing the number of interns we accept in our second year. A key component of the internship program has been the mentorship provided by our mentors. Each intern has a mentor, and internship mentors meet with their student intern periodically to provide encouragement, support, logistical problem-solving, and assistance with goal setting.

We are looking for members interested in being a mentor for an intern next year (October through May). The time commitment is not extensive, but the role is meaningful and important. Mentors have the support of the internship coordinator and the SOAH Youth and School Officials Action Group. Mentors have an orientation meeting with the coordinator, where their role is clarified, and they meet periodically with the internship coordinator. Current mentors have found the experience fun and rewarding.
